Admissions Talks: What Does “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” Mean to Admissions?

You hear admissions offices say that they value diversity, equity, and inclusion; but what does that really mean? At Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, it means starting from where we are: Baltimore. We exist in a very diverse city: 63 percent of the population is Black/African American, 31 percent is Caucasian, five percent is LatinX, and two percent is Asian. That’s why the admissions office loves to see prospective students who value working with diverse populations and providing equitable care—even if you are not someone from a diverse background—because your patients may not look like you.

But we also think it’s important that there are more nurses who look like their patients. And in many cases, we find that students want to become a nurse because of firsthand experiences. So share with us your race, ethnicity or religion, if you are a first-generation student, come from a low socioeconomic status background, or if you changed careers and took a nontraditional pathway to nursing. Go into detail with your essay; in admissions, the more information we know about you the better.
