Church Notes

Class notes for alumnae of the Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing

The Numbers in Our Future

Since the year 2007 began, I have heard that Saturday, July 7, 2007, will be celebrated by many who will plan “777” as their anniversary.

But the number I’m looking at is not 777, it is 246!

As many of you know, we have talked about someday having a class-room at Hopkins within the School of Nursing in honor of Church Home & Hospital Alumni. To me, this would be a dream come true. I feel very passionate about this and am 100 percent committed to seeing this become a reality.

This dream comes at a price of $250,000. Indeed, this is a lot of money, but not unrealistic. This is an opportunity to have our name and legacy live forever, and in a place of prestige and prominence. Think back to the time when we hosted a date in The Creutzburg Room or rushed to a class in The Nash Elliott Building. Imagine—someday nursing students will look forward to their next class in the Church Home Alumni Classroom!

In 2003, I asked you to match my $100 gift in order to raise $100,000 in honor of our 100th anniversary. Many of you were skeptical, but we surpassed our goal, and proudly established  the Freda Creutzburg Memorial Scholarship.

In 2007, I ask each of you to match my donation of $1,000 to the Church Home & Hospital Alumni Classroom Fund. My classmates and good friends, Susan Riddleberger ’73, Susan Blakeslee Phillips ’73, and Cindy Norman Carbo ’75 have also pledged $1,000, so we need 246 more alumni to make this dream a reality. You can pay in installments: for example, you can send $250 per year for four years. Donations of $5,000 or even $25,000 would be beyond awesome if you can be that generous and believe in the future of your traditions and memories.

Indeed, our goal would be even more attainable if we receive a lead gift. I am working with Hopkins to meet with individuals who may be in a position to do this. I will keep you up to date as I hear good news.

The School of Nursing building addition scheduled to begin construction in 2008 will truly be a state-of-the-art place of learning. Let’s make Church Home & Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association a part of it. Let’s cement our legacy through supporting the future of nursing education.

To be sure, the Church Home name means more to me than I can say. So many of you have written or told me how much you appreciate my work for the alumni. Your gratitude makes it all worthwhile. Now I need your help to make the classroom a reality.

Back to the magic 777…let’s see how much we can raise by July 7, 2007!

Send gifts to the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (address on the back of the magazine). Call or e-mail me with any questions you may have. Thanks so very much!

Class of ‘56 Homecoming Poem

The Class of '56 celebrates its 50th reunion.

By June Lee Adams, ’56

Can you remember way back to 1953,
when we all came together and lived like family.

Elliott, Nash, & Creutzburg were the big three,
The rulers of our small world, the holders of our key.

We came from many places, all pledging to do our best,
We were little “probies,” lower than all the rest.

They decked us out in uniforms, white aprons over a blue dress,
Black shoes and stockings on our feet, ready to start our quest.

Each morning at 7 in the rotunda we gathered for prayers and grace,
And Freda was always there to see who didn’t show their face!

Morning,  noon and night we studied and worked on the wards,
Then back to 126 wing to share in our daily tours.

After six long hard months, we finally got our cap.
And finally felt our feet were placed on the Church Home map.

The next years we rotated through medicine, surgery and OB,
And when we went to Hopkins, we thought that we were free.

Six months at Hopkins then back to Church Home to finish out our days,
Then graduation came, and we all went our separate ways.

Now fifty years have passed, and we celebrate that “Church Home” time,
As I now look around the room,
I think we have truly reached our prime!

Archives Update

The plea sent out for alumni to donate to the Church Home collection has been heard loud and clear. I want to thank one of my classmates, Dee Plitt Friedman Donnelly for her recent very generous donation of $500 to this effort. The Class of ’56, after all said and done, realized they had money left over from their 50th golden celebration. Thank you to the Class of ’56 for their generous donation to the Archives Fund. Aside from financial support, the archives need our treasures and fond memories. Thanks to Carol and Harold White who have lent their mother’s Class of 1938 group picture to be digitally copied for the archives collection. Mr. White’s mother was Irma Umstot White.

Ship Story Lives On

After the “Beacon of Hope” Award Story was featured in the Summer 2006 issue, I received a very nice e-mail from Dave Carrington, son of Marjorie Reynolds Carrington, ‘53, who was one of the recipients of this secret and coveted award. Dave wanted to know how he could get a copy of the picture to frame and give his mom for Christmas. A big “Thank You” to Donna Royster Swope, ‘66 who was also an award recipient, had a copy, and sent this to Mr. Carrington!

Needed

In order to complete the CHH collection, we need Yearbooks from 1961, 1962, 1963, & 1965. Please consider donating to the Archives.
