NEWGIZA University (NGU), a component of the newly-planned NEWGIZA community now developing outside Cairo, Egypt, is exploring with the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) methods to bring the Hopkins model of nursing education to Egypt.
Through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding, Hopkins has agreed to consult with NGU on the establishment of NEWGIZA University School of Nursing (NGUSON). The memorandum is the first step toward initial and sustained consultation designed to bring a center of excellence in nursing to the region.
Hopkins nursing leadership will now consult in the recruitment of NGUSON’s founding dean and faculty and advise on other aspects of the school’s development, including academics, administrative policies and procedures, and finances. Future consultations could include collaborative academic and research activities such as joint seminars, workshops, publications, and instruction.
Dean Martha N. Hill, PhD, RN, notes that the opportunity coincides with the recent launch of the School’s Center for Global Nursing and exemplifies the goals of the new Center, particularly “the essential need to provide targeted capacity development across the globe.”
“This is an exciting opportunity that shows there are no borders to education or practice,” says Pamela Jeffries, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. She adds, “This project is an example of our mission: to improve the health of individuals and diverse communities both locally and globally.”
