Two Nursing Leaders Join Faculty

School alumna Nancy E. Glass, PhD, MPH ’96, RN ’94, has returned to the school as an associate professor, and is working with the university’s interdisciplinary Center for Global Health. She provides clinical services and is an expert researcher in the areas of public health, health disparities, and intimate partner violence (IPV).

Glass is the president of the Nursing Network on Violence Against Women, International, and is conducting three major studies on intimate partner violence. With funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research, Glass will evaluate a workplace intervention to prevent and reduce the impact of IPV on the health, safety, and employment of low-income women. She will also assess for risk and protective factors of repeat victimization for women in same-sex relationships. And with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, she will evaluate the effectiveness of a permanent housing program for battered women.

Maureen George, PhD, RN, AE-C, an expert in asthma care, joins the faculty as an assistant professor, teaching in both the baccalaureate and master’s programs. She served as Coordinator of the Comprehensive Asthma Care Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania before coming to Hopkins to complete a post-doctoral fellowship at the School of Medicine.

George’s doctoral research, completed in 2003, studied minorities with asthma and their use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). She has continued research in this area, with a current project identifying CAM use for asthma in African Americans and Caucasians in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC.

George has received an Outstanding Leadership Award from the Southeastern Pennsylvania American Lung Association and most recently the Asthma Educator of the Year Award from the Association of Asthma Educators.
